WFAN Position Announcement: Plate to Politics and Communications

Plate to Politics Coordinator and Communications Coordinator Job Description Introduction This position will report directly to the WFAN Executive Director, and has two components: coordinating WFAN’s Plate to Politics program, and coordinating WFAN’s communications. Plate to Politics is WFAN’s training program for emerging leaders in healthy food and farming movement. WFAN’s communication efforts are focused on amplifying the voices of WFAN members and ensuring that the media narrative of food and agriculture includes women’s voices and our values of sustainability and food justice.

Responsibilities will include Plate to Politics:

  • Coordinate and facilitate leadership trainings in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin for women in food and agriculture
  • Recruit WFAN members and other women to attend the trainings
  • Create profiles on participants and share success stories
  • Evaluate events and conduct follow-up surveys with past attendees


  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors’ Communications Committee to refine core messages
  • Collect stories from members, conduct interviews, maintain a member story database, and write stories for our blog and newsletters
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets and speak to reporters
  • Manage WFAN’s social media presence and coordinate other communications with WFAN members


  • Meet with the WFAN Executive Director and attend staff meetings
  • Assist in writing grants, grant reports, and grant applications for funding for Plate to Politics and communications work
  • Identify future funding opportunities


  • Assist with fundraisers, as needed
  • Exhibit at events, as needed
  • Identify and participate in professional development
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director


  • Experience in facilitation, evaluation, and event planning
  • Passion for helping women attain leadership positions
  • Experience creating safe spaces and leading in all-women learning environments strongly preferred
  • Experience in developing relationships with reporters, giving interviews, and writing media releases
  • Strong writing and editing skills and experience writing for a general audience
  • Experience with social media platforms and organizing social media campaigns
  • Travel within the Midwest is required and applicants must have a valid drivers license


This is a fulltime, salaried position, with benefits and requirements as set out in the WFAN Employee Handbook. Salary range will be $37,000 – $42,000, commensurate with experience. Work from home is preferred, or office space in Story City, Iowa is provided. Salary is subject to merit and cost of living increases dependent upon evaluations and future program funding.
