Five Questions You Should Ask Your Tenant About Soil Health
How do you know when your farmer is doing all she or he can to protect and build the health of your soil? The Natural Resources Conservation Service has created a new handout with five questions you should ask your tenant to find out. The questions are simple and come with easy-to-understand explanations. The first – “Do you build organic matter in the soil?” – explains: “Finding a farmer who is interested in building organic matter by using practices like no-till and cover crops is like finding a bank with a better rate on a Certificate of Deposit.” The amount of organic matter in a farm’s soil often determines the price farmers are willing to pay to rent or buy farmland.
