Field Tours Will Visit Urban and Rural Sites Around Quad Cities

Tree PlantingFriday field tours are always popular at the WFAN annual conference, and this year’s options are sure to appeal to a wide variety of interests. The tours are concurrent, from 1 – 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon, Nov. 6, so be sure to choose only one. A box lunch is available beginning at 11:30 a.m. for an extra fee. Click here for full descriptions and links to tour site websites; here is a summary. Urban Agriculture Tour: Take a tour of the wide variety of urban agriculture projects going on in the Quad Cities! Some stops will include the Quad City Food Hub, QC Food Forest and Edible Landscape projects, Augie Acres (Augustana College student farm), and Centennial Park Urban Community Garden and Pantry.

Rural Tour – Focus on Horticulture: This tour is designed to give you a look at a variety of farm businesses based on horticulture. Stops will include the following women-owned farms: Toohey Achers, a 30-year-old market farm near Viola, IL; small frye farm of Maysville, IA, a vegetable, herb, and cut flower CSA; and Miss Effie’s Country Flowers, Iowa’s first you-pick flower farm near Donahue.

Rural Tour – Focus on Livestock: This tour will take you to three very different livestock-based businesses (two owned by the same family). Stops will include:

Triple Creek Dairy, a licensed goat dairy near Long Grove, IA, owned and operated by Brendia Kempf, and Scherer’s Custom Meats and Lost Grove Stables, both businesses owned and operated by Anne and Dale Scherer of Eldridge, IA.

You can also opt for one of three afternoon intensives on Friday, two on-site (Plate to Politics Leadership Training for Women, or the Pollinator Habitat Panel) and one off-site session designed for aspiring and beginning women farmers, which includes a peer discussion and a tour of a beginning woman farmer’s operation near Milan, IL. You can see descriptions of these three options, along with the Saturday agenda, at this link.
