Plate to Politics Trains Women at National Farmers Union’s Fall Legislative Fly-in
On September 11, 24 women attending National Farmers Union’s Fall Legislative Fly-in gathered for a two-hour Plate to Politics mini-workshop. At the organization’s most well-attended Fall Legislative Fly-In in over a decade, 350 Farmers Union members traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for stronger farm and food policy. The farmers and farm advocates spoke to members of Congress and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials about how they feel about the trade war, the farm bill, and other issues that will have a tremendous impact on their farms and their communities.
Women attending the Plate to Politics workshop were able to connect and network with women leaders from 14 states, identified their leadership skills, and practiced two-minute stump speeches they could use throughout their time at Fly-in once they returned home.
“More than 75 percent of the women in attendance were more likely to pursue a leadership position or run for office as a result of the training,” said Ash Bruxvoort, Plate to Politics Coordinator and certified Vote Run Lead trainer. “The women in the room had personal experiences with our current farm economy and many of them are already leaders in Farmers Union and their communities. Plate to Politics was created with the express intent of encouraging women like this to run for office.”
Plate to Politics is a nationwide effort to support and strengthen the national leadership role of women transforming our nation’s food system, from the federal agriculture policy agenda to what’s on our family’s dinner plate. The program focuses on providing leadership training to women engaged in healthy food and farming. WFAN works closely with VoteRunLead to provide training on topics from writing letters to the editor to funding a campaign for office.
Women, Food and Agriculture Network is hosting an all-day Plate to Politics workshop at their 2018 Annual Conference, November 2-3, 2018 at Des Moines, Iowa. Scholarships are available for women attending the Plate to Politics: Movement Leader track, thanks to generous funding from Rachel’s Network.
Thank you National Farmers Union for sponsoring this workshop and giving these women room to grow and lead!
